If time was more important than the life of this person, he should have done a fictional film. I think most people expected a biopic, and didn’t like the idea of a director leaving out iconic moments for the sake of the tone of his film. Who wanted that? This is a horrible assumption. The last thing I need in a movie is American exceptionalism. Dramas that do well with general audience are more of a balance in their overall tone, and I totally understand why. The general audience doesn’t wants to see people yell and cry for two hours straight. It didn’t inspire or excite the general audience, the trailer stresses people out more than it excites them, so they didn’t see it. That’s far more grounded to me than a movie that only takes on one aspect of a person. I really like dramas that balance highs and lows in film, this was just unrelenting low. It’s a shame they chose to make him such a one dimensional character. Instead, it’s just about the loss in his life. We don’t get to see his accomplishments on the lunar surface, and we don’t get to see him feel like this, overcome with positive emotions. The launch should have been filled with inspiration and hope, but instead they completely changed the weather from a bright Sunny day to a dark gloomy day.Įven when he’s on the moon, they just cannot wait to get back to the tragedy. They even changed some history to make things more gloomy. It didn’t do well because it focused entirely on tragedy and practically never let the audience experience the wonder of Space or bask in Armstrong accomplishments with him.

Tragedy in a space film is always welcome. I think the reason it didn’t do well is because it’s a grounded look at Neil Armstrong, and his life was ultimately filled with tragedy. Armstrong’s reserved drive really struck home with me.īut yeah the set pieces are great, acting is fantastic, characters are riveting, the sequence on the moon is beautiful, and the Apollo 1 portrayal is fucking horrifying, compared to how it was dramatized in Apollo 13 or the Right Stuff, which are also great movies.

It’s uplifting when you reflect on it and it’s more impactful than if the movie had just been Armstrong courageously inspiring his peers to keep pursuing the program, damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead. He just knew what needed to be done, put the work in, and made it up there, in spite of the tragedy. But the movie’s not a story of patriotism, it’s a dour look at the life of the first man on the moon, and honestly it’s more inspiring that the man didn’t have this heroic outlook to change human history. There was discourse around the movie, specifically around the movie not having “the flag shot”, and there were some outlets that claimed the movie didn’t even show the flag in the movie. Furthermore from accounts, he was an understated man, which people don’t really respond to in movies today, most protagonists in modern film have to be borderline meta or need to be constantly witty or spouting jokes.
